For more than two decades, Professor Friedland has been investigating the effects of air pollution on the cycling of carbon, nitrogen, and lead in high-elevation forests of New England and the Northeast. He participated in documenting and searching for causes of red spruce decline in the montane regions of New England and New York in the s and s. Recently, he has been examining the impact of increased demand for wood as a fuel and the subsequent effect on carbon stored deep in forest soils.
